“Be a Very Good Family”: Mr Muh’s Heartfelt Raya Massage

A Raya celebration with family and loved ones, cheering at a soccer match for the Singapore Lions, cycling along the beach, and taking in the beauty of nature with the love of one’s life—these may seem like ordinary experiences, easily taken for granted. For Mr Muh Mahmad Bin dame, however, they had become cherished memories.

Mr Muh has been warded at Ren Ci Community Hospital’s palliative care unit and is largely bed-bound due to his condition. Having missed the Raya celebration in 2024 because of his illness, one of his wishes was to celebrate Raya this year with his immediate and extended family.

When Ambulance Wish Singapore received the request, the team—comprising Genevieve, Mary Ann, Joanne and Karen—came together to organise a Raya gathering that closely resembled what his family was used to. With the support of Ren Ci’s doctors, nurses, rehabilitation team, and Nadirah, Mr Muh’s Senior Medical Social Worker, permission was obtained to bring him out of his ward to take part in the celebration.

On Wish Day, AWS volunteers decorated the space with festive accessories and balloons, reflecting the joy, gratitude and togetherness of Raya. Mr Muh was dressed in a brown baju, matching Mrs Muh’s. Due to his condition, he remained on his hospital bed while receiving guests, under the careful supervision of volunteer nurse Jasmine, with Hari Raya songs playing softly in the background.

A banquet table was laid out with many of Mr Muh’s favourite dishes, some lovingly prepared by his family. In one corner, an art table reflected his love for the beach and the sea. In the days leading up to the event, his art therapist, Shu Ning, had worked with him to design small cards for each family member to take home as mementoes.

Each card carried his message: “Be a very good family”—a simple but powerful reflection of what mattered most to him.

It was a joyful occasion. Mr Muh had not seen everyone gathered together like this for some time—sharing conversations, laughter and presence. Dressed in their Raya best, the family held both celebration and quiet emotion in the same space. The joy on their faces was unmistakable. Such is the gift of love and close family ties—giving meaning to life in its most profound moments. These memories were beautifully captured by Junyang.

Someone once said that from the moment we are born, we begin a journey towards our inevitable end. Yet in between, no matter where we are on that path, we can choose to celebrate life. We can invest in relationships that matter. We can create memories—ones that cannot be taken away, and that become part of a legacy carried forward for generations.
