At the tender age of 34, Mdm Nurwahidah faced a life-altering diagnosis, a condition that severely limited her mobility and senses. Despite these immense challenges, her heart remained tethered to her family: a devoted mother to a 9-year-old son and a 1.5-year-old daughter, and the unwavering support of her husband, Haziq. Her wish was simple: to create one more joyful memory with them at Bird Paradise, inspired by the photos her son had recently shared. This profound desire for togetherness is the very essence of wish granting.
Our small team of Ambulance Wish Singapore (AWS) volunteers, Josephine, Yasmin, and Kong Hoe, set about making her wish a reality. Our goal was to give Mdm Nurwahidah and her family a truly memorable wish experience.
A Morning of Hope and Anticipation
On a cloudy Friday morning on 18 December 2024, the long-awaited day finally arrived. Her hospital room at Tan Tock Seng Hospital buzzed with anticipation as we prepared Mdm Nurwahidah for her special outing. We surprised her with a radiant bouquet of sunflowers, a symbol of hope and resilience, reminding her to embrace life’s joy.
Shermaine, our dedicated nursing aide, arrived early for a medical briefing, while May, our volunteer makeup artist, delicately enhanced Mdm Nurwahidah’s features. Dressed in an outfit lovingly chosen by her husband, she looked radiant as she awaited the ambulance’s arrival.
Pure Joy at Bird Paradise
The moment we arrived at Bird Paradise, the joy on her face was unmistakable. Her children’s excitement was contagious, their love for their mother shining brightly as we celebrated her birthday with a Doraemon-themed cupcake and her favourite plushie. It was a moment of pure connection for a family united in love.
The Bird Discovery Tour was a highlight, guided by the compassionate Wildlife Guides, Ava and Rachel. They ensured Mdm Nurwahidah was included in every aspect. In a moment of courage, Mdm Nurwahidah, with her husband’s reassuring hands by her side, held the feeding tray to feed the starlings. The tour’s crowning moment was an interaction with a hornbill, where even from her stretcher, Mdm Nurwahidah shared the same joy and wonder as her children.
The day concluded at the Sky Amphitheatre for the Wings of the World Presentation, where her family’s laughter and smiles painted a picture of love’s enduring strength.
A Memory Etched in the Heart
As the outing came to an end, the weight of parting was palpable. Her daughter leaned in, pressing a tender kiss on her mother’s cheek; a gesture so simple yet filled with unspoken love and longing. This day was a treasure and a testament to the strength of love even in the face of life’s greatest challenges.
Special thanks go out to May for her thoughtful makeup, Hibiscus Florist for the lovely sunflower bouquet, Caring Hearts for the attentive nursing support, Bob the Baker Boy for the delightful cupcakes, and Sunlight Ambulance for their assistance in making this unforgettable day possible.
