When Mdm Regine Lo’s wish was shared with us on Tuesday, our team quickly came together to make it a reality by the weekend. Despite being in SGH, Mdm Regine’s spirits were high, and her wish was simple yet profound: she wanted a birthday party with her family and close friends. Additionally, she expressed a deep desire to show her appreciation to the doctors and nurses who have been caring for her during this time.
Led by Irene, and with the support of volunteers Rachel, Elaine, and myself, we planned a memorable celebration. During our conversations with Regine’s husband and sister, we discovered her love for Donald Duck, inspiring us to source a custom-made Donald and Daisy Duck birthday cake—a special touch that brought her immense joy.
Given her mobility limitations and dependency on oxygen, we hosted the party in her hospital room. With the help of the nurses, we transformed the space with flowers, balloons, and of course, the Donald Duck cake. The moment she was wheeled back into the room, her smile lit up the entire space.
Regine’s friends and family showered her with love, bringing flowers, photos, and hand-drawn get-well cards. A delightful surprise was the mahjong-themed cake, reflecting one of her favorite pastimes. The highlight of the event was the birthday song, sung in three different languages, uniting everyone in celebration.
As a special token of her appreciation, Regine made sure to thank the doctors and nurses who have been so attentive to her care, showing her gratitude through heartfelt words and gestures.
We also arranged for a unique palm art activity, led by Rachel, where the family created a keepsake art piece with their palm prints. It was a beautiful moment that symbolized the bond they share.
Seeing the joy and gratitude on Regine’s face made every effort worthwhile. It was a day filled with love, laughter, and the warmth of family and friends—a true celebration of life.
It is with great sadness that we share the news that Mdm Regine Lo has passed away on 27 Aug 2024. The family informed us of her peaceful passing, just two days after we had the privilege of celebrating her birthday together. Our hearts go out to her loved ones during this difficult time.
We will forever cherish the memories of her joyful spirit and the love that surrounded her on her special day. Rest in peace, Regine.
