Mr Toh Lye Chye has three sweethearts: his wife and his two daughters. When illness caused him to miss both his girls’ weddings in January and February 2025, his heart’s desire was to recreate the cherished wedding tea ceremony. This profound expression of paternal love is the very essence of wish granting.
Unfortunately, just one day after the wish was conveyed to Ambulance Wish Singapore (AWS), Mr Toh’s condition declined swiftly. By the following day, 21 February 2025, he was no longer able to open his eyes or sit up.
A Grand Ceremony in Ward 14G
Despite the physical challenges, Mr Toh’s eagerness and willpower to participate in the wish fulfilment were palpable. When the hairstylist proceeded to give him a haircut, he gamely cooperated by moving his head for the right snips. While the trimming took place, Mrs Toh shared heart-warming snippets about his job and how much he adored his daughters.
The moment the photographer announced the commencement of the photo-taking, Mr Toh demonstrated his determination by raising his hand to give a feisty thumbs-up sign.
As he was unable to drink, his daughters and sons-in-law took turns to clasp his hand onto the double-happiness red teacup. Shot after shot was captured while his favourite Chinese song, 我是一只小小鸟 (I am a little bird), played softly in the background.
The Grandeur of Closeness
It was a very simple, improvised tea ceremony, held right in Ward 14G. But the true grandeur was the incredible closeness and love that permeated Mr Toh’s expanded family. This act of love ensured that Mr Toh was fully included in celebrating his daughters, making it a truly memorable wish experience for everyone present.
