Fulfilling a Golfer’s Wish: Mr Salleh’s Emotional Return

For 82-year-old Mr Salleh, the Singapore Island Country Club (SICC) was more than a course; it was his second home, the backdrop to a lifetime of passion. His heartfelt wish was simple: to revisit the place where he fell in love with golf, caddied for the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, and built an impressive legacy. This is the enduring power of wish granting: connecting a person to their most cherished memories.

When illness left him bedridden, fulfilling this wish seemed challenging. However, a dedicated Ambulance Wish Singapore (AWS) team, Leo, Emily, Estela, Marecel, and Kong Hoe, stepped in. After visiting Mr Salleh to hear his inspiring story, they worked with Grace, who helped coordinate swiftly with SICC. Within just four days, they created a plan to bring this memorable wish experience to life for Mr Salleh and his family.

A Day of Joy and Nostalgia at the Club

On 7 May, under clear skies, Emily accompanied Mr Salleh in the ambulance to SICC. Though he seemed weary at first, his face lit up instantly upon arrival, dressed smartly in an SICC polo shirt and golf cap. Waiting to welcome him were his extended family, SICC management, staff, and AWS volunteers.

As he was wheeled through the club on a stretcher, he revisited treasured spots: the reception area, the caddie shack, the putting green, and the first and ninth holes. Watching him take in the familiar sights, everyone present could sense his deep connection to the course. For him, golf was not just a sport; it was a lifelong passion.

A Tribute to a Remarkable Golfer

Affectionately nicknamed “Buaya” (Malay for “crocodile” – a term for golfers who outperform their handicap), Mr Salleh was deeply touched when Marecel presented him with a crocodile plush toy. He held the gift close throughout the visit.

Surrounded by loved ones, Mr Salleh smiled warmly the entire time. Despite his impressive golfing achievements, including caddying for Singapore’s founding Prime Minister, he remained truly humble. Many of his grandchildren, in fact, were unaware of his extraordinary legacy in the sport until that day.

The visit concluded with a celebration of his 82nd birthday at the new clubhouse, followed by his favourite fried beef kway teow at home. This day was more than a trip down memory lane; it was a joyful celebration of Mr Salleh’s journey and the power of a memorable wish experience.
