For Mdm Tan, a 64-year-old confined mostly to bed, her wish was simple yet profound: to have a family portrait taken with her seven siblings. This desire to re-enact cherished moments from the yesteryear with her four sisters and three brothers is the beautiful essence of wish granting.
Mdm Tan’s beloved niece, Faye, coordinated this wish with Ambulance Wish Singapore (AWS), a testament to the strong bond that showed there was no generation gap between them. It was clear how much this moment would mean to Mdm Tan and her close-knit family, and together, the team set out to create a truly memorable wish experience.
A Portrait of Love and Legacy
With the help of Mdm Tan’s niece, Faye, arrangements were quickly made. We brought in our talented photographer, Jay, to capture the cherished family moments. To honour their Hokkien heritage, the AWS Team also surprised the family with a generous spread of traditional dishes – Hokkien Mee, oyster omelette, Iberico pork fried bean curd, and ang ku kueh. Mdm Tan’s fondness for Hokkien cuisine was not forgotten, and the team arranged for a beautiful spread for the family to savour.
To brighten the event, a traditional Chinese Red Banner was prepared, along with a beautiful bouquet of flowers chosen to match Mdm Tan’s outfit and elegant demeanour. Volunteer Jo-Ann grabbed a Polaroid camera to ensure the family could hold those memories in their hands right away. We hung up the instant photos, and watching the family share smiles and laughs was truly heartwarming.
A Heart Full of Joy
Though Mdm Tan couldn’t enjoy the food due to a poor appetite, her heart was full as she smiled and joked with her siblings, listening to soft Hokkien music in the background. The family chatted and reminisced about the good old times as the event drew to a close under a joyful and happy backdrop. Before the AWS volunteer team, Bernard, Bryan, and ShouMei, left, Mdm Tan thanked them repeatedly, her gratitude touching all of their hearts.
This closely knitted relationship of Mdm Tan’s family transpired throughout all present, and to our volunteers who could deeply feel the family love and bond. This day was a beautiful reminder that Ambulance Wish Singapore is about celebrating lives, creating moments of joy, and bringing families together.
