Visiting the Christmas Lights: Mr Mahadi

Mr. Mahadi was recently diagnosed with metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma, and his condition unfortunately progressed rapidly. This took away precious quality time with his family, as much of his journey was spent in the hospital undergoing treatment.

Fortunately, an Advanced Practice Nurse Stella from the Palliative Team took the time to explore meaningful activities he had previously enjoyed with his family. One cherished memory was visiting Orchard Road to admire the Christmas lights together. Reflecting on this, it became clear that something as seemingly simple as enjoying festive lights might not have been possible this year due to his prognosis.

Recognizing the urgency of his condition, a team of AWS volunteer nurses from SGH Ward 48 organized a special outing to ION Orchard on the evening of December 17. Earlier that day, we gave Mr. Mahadi a gentleman’s haircut and a clean shave, ensuring he looked and felt his best for the occasion.

With the assistance of ION Orchard staff and Ambulance crew, Mr. Mahadi was safely escorted to the Christmas lights display. As soon as he arrived, his spirits lifted visibly—he embraced his loved ones, showering them with hugs and kisses. The moment was profoundly emotional, creating a beautiful memory for everyone present.

Shortly after, Mr. Mahadi was compassionately discharged to spend his final days at home. Surrounded by his family, he passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love and unforgettable memories.
