Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a time of joy, reflection, and renewal—a celebration that embodies forgiveness, grace, and reconciliation. It is a season when families reunite, strengthen their bonds, and enjoy the warmth of togetherness. But family is not just about lineage; it is shaped by kindness, and the steadfast presence of those who stand by us in times of need. For 78-year-old Mr. Mahlan Bin Ahmad, battling heart failure and metastatic prostate cancer, this Hari Raya carried a different weight. Estranged from his children, he longed for the familiar sounds of laughter and companionship, for the warmth of a shared meal, for the sense of belonging that a festive gathering brings. Though his own children could not be with him, his ‘family’—his neighbours who check in on him daily—became the ones to share in his celebration. Recognizing the significance of his wish, the volunteers of Ambulance Wish Singapore (AWS) sprang into action to orchestrate a heartfelt Hari Raya gathering for Mr. Mahlan and his wife in a short span of 3 days. Instead of dwelling on absence, we sought to fill the room with presence—the presence of community, of warmth, and of human connection. His elderly neighbours, despite their own frailties, dressed up for the occasion and joined in with enthusiasm, turning this simple event into something truly special. With the soulful tunes of P. Ramlee’s songs playing in the background, the celebration unfolded as one of quiet yet profound joy. Over shared food, Malay music, and heartfelt conversations, we witnessed how the bonds of friendship and community can uplift the spirit. Though Mr. Mahlan was reserved—perhaps reflecting on those he missed—he still embraced the role of a gracious host, presenting small food gifts to his guests. His neighbours, in turn, relished the opportunity to celebrate together, reminding us all that companionship is a source of resilience and strength. This gathering was a testament to the power of human connection and the mission of Ambulance Wish Singapore—to bring dignity, comfort, and joy to those facing life’s final chapter. For Mr. Mahlan, it was more than just a Hari Raya celebration; it was a reminder that he is not alone, that he is valued, and that even in the absence of his children, love surrounded him. It was a privilege for our AWS team to be part of this moment, ensuring that on this important occasion, one less person felt lonely. To all who made this possible—our dedicated volunteers, medical social workers, and Mr. Mahlan’s neighbours who embraced this spontaneous gathering with open hearts—we extend our deepest gratitude. May we all continue to carry the spirit of Hari Raya in our daily lives, spreading love, acceptance, and the warmth of community to those who need it most. Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
